SPACES

Inspired by historical and contemporary artists, this series also highlights the critical need for affordable Bay Area artist spaces to support a vibrant creative community.

Spaces Collaborative Project

As part of my Artist Residency at the ICB Studios in Sausalito, CA I created this Exquisite Corpse inspired Collaborative Project. This piece was a way of representing a community of artists, a source of support in what is typically a very solitary endeavor. Participants were first recorded into the space as silhouettes and then using this framework we began to elaborate on that structure, first with value and then color. I devised some simple rules that required movement by each artist so that each of us would be forced to work on areas that were started by another. Along the way we found inspiration in what others had created and tried to find a balance between what might be left alone and what might be altered in the hope of improving. This was a conversation and a negotiation between more than 15 people, with a variety of voices and attitudes. Thanks to all that participated!
